Southwest Human Development is Arizona’s largest nonprofit dedicated to early childhood development. Founded in 1981 by Ginger Ward, the agency began with six staff members serving 175 children through a single disabilities program. Southwest Human Development is now Arizona’s largest nonprofit dedicated to early childhood development, with a dedicated team of more than 900 caring staff members, serving 135,000 children and families each year.
The first five years of life are the most critical to a child’s successful lifelong development. Southwest Human Development offers more than 40 comprehensive programs and services that focus on young children – ages birth to 5 – and their families in the areas of child development and mental health, Easterseals disabilities services, Early Literacy and Head Start, child welfare and professional education.
These programs and services improve lives and help families by supporting young children and their caregivers during this important time.
Decades of research demonstrate that each child’s earliest experiences and relationships establish the foundation for intellectual, social, emotional, physical and behavioral development. Southwest Human Development strives to give all children an optimal start in life with opportunities for a bright and successful future.
For eight consecutive years, Phoenix Business Journal and Quantum Workplace named Southwest Human Development as one of the Valley’s “Best Places to Work” among large-sized companies, based on employee life, workplace environment, leadership and culture of the organization and management practices.
Southwest Human Development is a proud recipient of the Healthy Arizona Worksite Award, and ranked as one of the Valley’s “Healthiest Employers” for four consecutive years among mid-sized companies.
